What Is Stop Loss Insurance?

YXE Benefits offers the simple, stable, smart group benefits choice for Saskatoon businesses; combining accessibility, flexibility and the stability of pooled benefits. Saskatoon companies choose the Chambers group plan because it offers unsurpassed value & outstanding customer service. The Chambers plan group benefits are for Saskatoon Chamber members.  In our latest post, we share an article by Benefits Canada on stop-loss insurance.

YXE Benefits Saskatoon

Stop-loss Insurance takes claim off the Employer’s shoulders

When an employee has a health issue requiring expensive treatment, the associated high-cost claims can be significant for their benefits plan sponsor. But it’s impossible to predict when a large claim will arise, so stop-loss insurance, which takes the claim off the employer’s shoulders, is one option to help protect against these unexpected costs.

As a type of insurance policy that sits on top of a benefits plan, stop-loss is available to both fully- and self-insured plan sponsors. When choosing stop-loss insurance, an employer selects a threshold up to which it can reasonably cover claims — ranging from between $10,000 and $100,000 — and any claims beyond that will be covered by the policy.

Stop-loss not a substitute for plan management

The main benefit of stop-loss insurance is its ability to protect the Saskatoon employer from catastrophic claims. Forstop loss insurance
self-insured groups, it primarily acts as a budgeting tool so there aren’t any unexpected hits that could affect accounting.

On the other hand, stop-loss can become costly. While a claim may be mitigated in the first year, premiums can rise
in the following years, essentially providing only short-term stabilization. This is especially difficult if the claim is reoccurring, which is the case for most drug claims.

“Stop-loss doesn’t help you avoid cost; it simply helps you prevent an unexpected surge in costs in a given year. It’s not a substitute for plan management.”

Another drawback is that most plans only have a single market for stop-loss insurance, meaning employers can only purchase it from one group, typically their own health insurer, which limits them to that insurer’s quote.

To limit risk, employers can use a pre-existing condition clause for an employee’s first year of employment by setting benefits to a specific limit so they can’t bring in unexpected expenses. Another option is to put a limit on drug reimbursement levels or incorporate provincial drug programs into the benefits plan.

While stop-loss prevents large, unexpected claims from affecting a plan sponsor, it’s important to understand that issues can still arise after a claim is made and employers should be aware of all the available options, so they can make a decision before it’s too late.

2019 Top Trends in Health Benefits Shared by YXE Benefits Saskatoon

YXE Benefits offers the simple, stable, smart group benefits choice for Saskatoon businesses; combining accessibility, flexibility and the stability of pooled benefits. Saskatoon companies choose the Chambers group plan because it offers unsurpassed value & outstanding customer service. The Chambers plan group benefits are for Saskatoon Chamber members.  In our latest post, we share an article on the 2019 top trends in health benefits.

Top Trends in Canada Health Benefits in 2019

  1. Heard of Telemedicine?

Many insurers have established partnerships with providers of telemedicine, and are actively promoting it as an optional benefit, or for plan sponsors, to promote it as an eligible expense under Healthcare Spending Accounts (HSAs).

Plan members can use their computer, phone or smartphone app to get 24/7 access to nurse practitioners or physicians, who can immediately diagnose and prescribe for common ailments. Employers that derive most of their revenue from hourly billings, for example, will likely find the service especially appealing.

“It certainly provides value to private plans because it gives very timely and efficient access to care so that employees are more productive and do not have to take time off work to go to walk-in clinics.”

  1. Virtual care

Virtual care takes telemedicine a step further by providing an alternative way to access ongoing care (for example, for plan members already diagnosed with chronic conditions). Members consult with specialists and other allied healthcare professionals by phone, computer or smart app.

Virtual care for mental health, and more specifically for cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), is leading the way. Indeed, the long-term aim is to promote the use of virtual CBT as an early intervention, while employees are still at work, to prevent disability claims.

“A lot of pilots are out there now for virtual CBT. The important thing to note is that it doesn’t necessarily mean additional costs for the plan sponsor or new out-of-pocket costs for the plan member. This is about diverting some of the traditional benefit dollars to deliver services in a different way, and more cost-effectively.”

  1. Healthcare Apps

Recently, we have seen a number of healthcare apps, from both start-up vendors and traditional healthcare innovators. Insurers will soon be vetting the options to determine which are medically valid and financially viable as benefit offerings. These apps will complement existing benefits and can reduce costs.

“For example, an employee may go to a psychologist every six weeks, at a cost to the plan of $150 per visit. Between visits, he uses an app that costs $10 a month that helps him manage his anxiety day-to-day. Today, that $150 visit is an eligible expense, but the $10 app is not. If the $10 app saved one or more psychologist visits per year, it would save money and cover its own cost.”

As with many new benefits, coverage for healthcare apps will likely initially be promoted as an eligible expense under HCSAs.

  1. Targeted Health messaging

This year could mark a pivotal year for wellness supports from the workplace, due to insurers’ growing capabilities in analytics and artificial intelligence to send targeted, action-oriented health information to plan members.

“We can identify plan members who are at risk for chronic conditions, or who may be at risk for disability leave. We can reach out to them, with their consent, with helpful information and suggestions for care.”

Personalized, regular health messaging could be the missing link to help prevent and manage chronic disease. While past pilot projects consistently showed the value of coaching from allied health professionals (such as pharmacists and dietitians) for members with health risk factors or chronic diseases, member enrollment was a challenge and ongoing costs a concern. The incorporation of targeted messaging from insurers, with automated “nudges” that can be delivered digitally, may help with both engagement and cost-effectiveness.

  1. Medical cannabis

The most popular conversation come renewal time this year will likely be about coverage for medical cannabis. Now that most insurers have put together offerings for optional coverage, plan sponsors will be able to address a topic that continues to steadily garner media attention—which in turn stokes consumer interest.

Currently, Health Canada reports that more than 300,000 Canadians take medical cannabis, presumably paying out of pocket (or possibly using funds from healthcare spending accounts).

Heard of Teladoc Telemedicine Service?

While Chambers Plan continues to provide stable, comprehensive group benefits to over 30,000 Canadian firms, we are always on the lookout for opportunities to provide you and your employees with even greater value.

In a recent survey the Globe and Mail reported that  57% of Canadians reported they could not secure an appointment with their family doctor within 48 hours, and 76% of Canadians found it difficult to secure care during evenings, weekends and holidays.

Not only is this adding strain to our healthcare system, leading to exceedingly long wait times in walk-in clinics and patients progressively seeking non-urgent care in emergency rooms, but it contributes to increased absenteeism in the workplace.

We are thrilled to announce our partnership with Teladoc Health, the global leader in virtual care who provides convenient access to high-quality care for millions of people in more than 130 countries. The Teladoc telemedicine service helps members consult with a physician about non-urgent medical matters by video conference or by phone, from wherever they are, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

When you need a doctor, call one anytime, anywhereTeladoc Telemedicine Service

Up in the middle of the night with a sick child? Need a prescription refill but don’t want to spend hours in a waiting room? Living or vacationing in a remote location, making it difficult to obtain medical care? Chambers Plan, in partnership with Teladoc Health, now offers a solution.

During the visit, members can receive a diagnosis, treatment recommendation, and even be prescribed medicine when necessary. Every doctor is certified by the Canadian College of Family Physicians to ensure the highest standards of quality.

And the best part is, as of September 1st, 2019, Chambers Plan now offers the Teladoc telemedicine service at no additional charge to all Plan members, and their dependents, who hold a Chambers Plan Extended Health Care benefit.

YXE Benefits Team Shares A Study About How Paternity Leave Improves A Mothers Health

In our latest post, we share a recent study regarding how paternity leave can improve mothers’ health.

YXE Benefits Saskatoon

Paternity leave can improve mothers’ health

When fathers take paternity leave, it can actually benefit the health of new mothers. The study looked at the effects of a 2012 Swedish law that allows fathers to take up to 30 days off work, as needed, the year after the birth of a child, but while the mother is also taking leave.

Reduction in prescriptions, hospitalizations and visits to specialists

Where fathers took parental leave in the first six months after childbirth, the researchers found a 26 per cent decrease in prescriptions for anti-anxiety medications among new mothers, as well as a 14 per cent reduction in hospitalizations or visits to specialists and an 11 per cent decrease in antibiotic prescriptions.

Though the research found fathers took only a few days intermittently within those six months, the timing proved critical because it allowed new mothers to get the health care and sleep they needed, along with the opportunity to take preventative health measures.

The flexibility to take those days ad hoc was also an important factor, the study noted.

“While workplace flexibility is perceived to be a key determinant of maternal labour supply, less is known about fathers’ demand for flexibility or about intra-household spillover effects of flexibility initiatives. This paper examines these issues in the context of a critical period in family life — the months immediately following childbirth — and identifies the impacts of paternal access to workplace flexibility on maternal postpartum health”

Paternity leave helps to reduce the risk of postpartum health complications.

The research found increasing a father’s temporal flexibility reduces the risk of a mother experiencing physical postpartum health complications and improves her mental health.

“Our results suggest that mothers bear the burden from a lack of workplace flexibility — not only directly through greater career costs of family formation, as previously documented — but also indirectly.”

Lets Talk About Well Being In The Workplace

YXE Benefits offers the simple, stable, smart choice for Saskatoon businesses; combining accessibility, flexibility and the stability of pooled benefits. Saskatoon companies choose The Chambers plan because it offers unsurpassed value & outstanding customer service. The Chambers plan group benefits are exclusively for Chamber members.  In our latest post, we discuss mental health, mental disorder and the overall well being of your Saskatoon staff.

Are You Aware that One in Five People Will Suffer From Mental Disorders?

Is well being on the decline?

But before we answer that question, let’s first define “well-being.”

The phrase “well being” gets bandied about a lot, and we take for granted that its meaning is clear. But what is it exactly? It’s not a lack of physical or mental disease. In fact, it’s not defined negatively as an absence so much as a presence.

People with a sense of well being possess certain positive characteristics:

  • Balance
  • Resilience
  • Contentment
  • Goals
  • Flexibility
  • Self-confidence
  • Support
  • Gratitude
  • Connection

True well being, according to a report by the British think tank, the New Economic Foundation, means “personal fulfillment,” feeling good about yourself and where you are in life, maintaining a healthy curiosity about the world, a sense of purpose, and strong social relationships. Those with high well being enjoy life more.

15 Traits of Well Being

Here are fifteen characteristics of people with high well being:

  1. Connected: They have strong relationships with people who are close and supportive. In fact, their life goals are tied to social relationships and positive connections with others. They’re not into making money for money’s sake. They’re attuned to themselves and others.
  2. Curious: People with a high well being share an inquisitiveness about their world and surroundings and mindfulness about their senses, thoughts, and behaviours.
  3. Giving: Being of service to others, like volunteering, enhances self-worth and also reduces mortality in aging adults. Those who give their time and resources to others feel better about themselves.
  4. Active: Being active is good for physical, emotional, and mental health. Physical activity releases endorphins that lift your mood and energy level. Due to regular exercise, those with high well being have a lower risk of chronic illnesses, memory loss, depression, and anxiety.
  5. Learners: Life-long learners, whether formal or informal education, maintain a sense of purpose and competency, thereby improving a positive self-image. Education also provides social interaction opportunities.
  6. Balanced: They keep their stress levels in check through mental and physical activities that relax or remind them of pleasant sensations, like playing music, being out in nature, or working out. They also know how to relax, have downtime, balancing out work. Finally, they know how to slow down and observe, meditate, and appreciate to understand and control their worWell Beinglds.
  7. Healthy: Those with a greater well being eat and sleep well. They avoid mood-altering substances, like caffeine, alcohol, processed foods, sugary snacks, refined carbs, and fried foods. And they eat more mood-boosting foods, such as Omega-3 fatty fish (salmon, sardines, tuna), nuts, avocados, beans, flaxseed, leafy greens, and fresh fruit. They sleep 7 to 9 hours a night
  8. Centred: They have a purpose and set goals. People who find meaning in life have superior mental health and immune systems. Purpose and meaning may derive from work, paid or unpaid, that is creative, productive, and engaging, like gardening, writing, caring for a pet, or volunteering. Being a caregiver for an aging parent or sick child likewise gives meaning and purpose to life. They’re people who spend quality time with family and friends.
  9. Kind: They treat others and themselves well through kind acts and self-care.
  10. Content: They like themselves. People with higher well being have positive perceptions of their bodies and physical appearance, regardless of societal expectations. They feel positive self-worth.
  11. Flexible: They’re not rigid in the face of the unexpected. They can adapt to disappointment or challenging situations with circumspection and adaptability.
  12. Aware: They’re in touch with their emotions and know themselves, their reactions, motivations, strengths, weaknesses, and behaviors.
  13. Grateful: They appreciate all they have.
  14. Groomed: They understand that caring for their appearance reflects positively on themselves and attracts others to them, boosting self-confidence and self-esteem. Looking their best impress others and enhances opportunity, personality, and gives them an advantage. Caring for one’s outward appearance is an act of self-love.
  15. Resilient: They don’t let missteps and pitfalls lead to their downfall. Instead, they pick themselves up and start again.

Choose to Be Well

Well being is a state of mind—and being—where characteristic traits pre-exist and grow from a sense of fullness about all life and its offerings. Clearly, healthy people are optimists, seeing the glass as half full.

Though some of these well-being traits are inherited, most can be acquired or honed by intention, practice, and effort. For example, maintaining fitness and diet take willpower and consciousness. Stress reduction through yoga, meditation, problem-solving, self-awareness, and education similarly require effort and devotion to daily practices.

Of course, there’s always help from counsellors, fitness trainers, employers, family, friends, and authors of self-help books. But some exercises are simpler, like mindfulness, which is merely practiced attention to each of life’s moments as they unfold.

Achieving, maintaining, or maximizing well-being require a decision to be well and then a commitment to living a healthful, loving, productive, and meaningful life and career!

Promoting A Good Nights Sleep Is Important For Your Team Productivity and Wellness

YXE Benefits offers the simple, stable, smart choice for Saskatoon businesses; combining accessibility, flexibility and the stability of pooled benefits. Saskatoon companies choose the Chambers group plan because it offers unsurpassed value & outstanding customer service. In our latest post, we discuss why  a good nights sleep is important for productivity and wellness

The Importance Of  A Good Nights Sleep

Have you heard of a book called “Even Superheroes Sleep”?  This book talks about superheroes and sleeping. So, Batman works hard helping Gotham City stay safe. He needs a rest, so his mind stays sharp and focused. This is a great children’s book to read. But, essentially the parallel here with superheroes and needing to sleep is that, in spite of how much everything is going on, heroes really get good sleep!  Let’s just replace the superheroes with the hard-working superheroes on your team,  and they part of your employee wellness program.

How can a good nights sleep be integrated into your employee wellness program?

Track Your Sleep

Fitbit good nights sleep

Use of device trackers and some health apps that have the sleep tracking functionality, a very common example is Fitbit.

Basically, these detect your sleep quality. But, some other things that you can do in terms of sleep challenges could be the use of wellness cards or wellness tiles or smart tiles, both on web and mobile, which attaches points and incentives to make sure people are aware of their sleeping patterns.

We all know that getting to bed usually around 9:00 o’clock is really key. But, for those that are a part of the 4:30 a.m. club that get up really really early, there’s a whole day waiting for you when you wake up.

Cool and Comfortable

Another trick is to make sure your mattress is cool. There’s a couple of things you can do to make sure your mattress is cool. There’s the chill pad. It’s a really expensive device, but it’s really worth it.

Other Sleep-Promoting Ideas

Some other creative things that you can do are to make sure you do yoga before bed. Stretching out your legs really helps and stretching out your thighs helps make you kind of a little bit sleepy. Don’t eat too much sugar or cards before bed.

Again, make sure that this is part of your wellness program and make sure that these behaviours are encouraged. Some other things that you can do are to make sure that you are meditating and clearing your mind.  Somehow just listening or reading fiction before bed is really key and helpful for many. Also, stretching right before hopping on the bed, reduces your stress. Meditation also helps

So, track your sleep as well if you’re using a device tracker. It should be telling you things like when you’re cruising for a bruising, if you’re going to bed after 10:00 pm, for example. But, anyway it’s time for me to go to bed so I can wake up at 4:30.

Everyone have a good night.
